Choosing a repair or a whole-wall skim
A local repair may be enough for a small isolated hole where the rest of the wall is sound. If the surface has several old patches or a visibly uneven texture, a continuous skim may give a more consistent base for decorating.
Check loose edges and the surrounding background before deciding the repair size. What looks like a small damaged patch can extend into adjoining plaster that has lost its bond.
Ceiling cracks and older coatings
Recurring ceiling cracks, soft patches or sagging need assessment before finishing. If the ceiling has an unknown textured coating, do not scrape or sand it: older coatings may contain asbestos and should be appropriately assessed.
Describe whether the issue followed a leak, electrical work or gradual deterioration. That history helps establish which checks should happen before a ceiling skim or repair is agreed.
Getting walls ready for decoration
Wallpaper should normally be removed so the wall can be assessed and prepared. Skimming over paper can compromise adhesion if it loosens beneath the new finish. Agree who will handle stripping and floor protection as part of the scope.
