Start with assessment, not scraping
Do not attempt to flatten an unknown coating yourself. Age or appearance cannot reliably establish whether asbestos is present. A competent assessment and, where appropriate, testing should inform what work can safely be planned.
This service is not a claim of asbestos surveying or licensed removal. If specialist work is needed, that must be arranged before plastering proceeds.
When a smooth finish may be suitable
The coating and its background need to be sound, firmly bonded and appropriate for the proposed preparation. Loose material, moisture damage or an unstable ceiling may mean a simple skim is unsuitable.
After safety and condition checks, a compatible preparation and finish can be discussed. The height and texture of the coating, room access and existing ceiling details influence the scope.
Preparation and finishing
Clear and protect the room, make relevant fittings safe and agree the approach before work starts. Any specialist assessment or preparation should be included in the project sequence.
A finished skim needs time to dry evenly before decorating. Conditions, coat thickness and materials determine drying time rather than a universal deadline.

Can all Artex be skimmed? No. Safety, adhesion and background condition determine suitability. Can a photo establish asbestos content? No; appropriate assessment is needed.
